Tech Corner – Calculating Hypo Conversions
These calculations are for design estimate and budgeting purposes only, a water sample Cl2 demand test should be performed for design purposes.
NaOCl (Sodium Hypochlorite) & available chlorine
1 gal 12.5% Solution = 1lb cl2 = 125000 ppm
1 gal 10% Solution = .83 lb cl2 = 100000 ppm
1 gal 5% Solution = .42 lb cl2 = 50000 ppm
1 gal .8% Solution = .067 lb cl2 = 8000 ppm
Typical Wastewater Cl2 demand is 6-8 ppm required dose plus what ever desired residual (1-2 ppm) equals Cl2 dose 7.5 ppm
EXAMPLE:
4 MGD ADF (Million Gallons Day Average Daily flow)
Flow rate in gpm x Dose ppm x 1440 / solution strength ppm = feed rate gallons per day
4000000 gpd / 24 hr / 60 min = 2777.77 gpm
6 ppm demand + 1.5 ppm desired residual = 7.5 ppm dose
onsite generated NaOCl = .8% Solution = 8000 ppm
2777.77 x 7.5 x 1440 = 30,000,000
30,000,000 / 8000 ppm = 3750 gpd of .8% Sodium Hypochlorite or 156.25 GPH
